Experience
I am a professional biologist with more than 20 years' experience in teaching biology and related sciences. Currently I am an endangered-species biologist studying whales, elephants, Alaskan birds and sea turtles, but I used to be a university professor and I still love to teach. At the college level I have taught over a dozen different biology courses, including all forms of intro biology and a wide swath of upper-level courses. I'm a contributor to several major college biology textbooks and instructor guides. I've done a great deal of college-freshmen advising in my time and can help with writing skills, study habits, standardized tests (SATs and also GREs) and career counseling. Though I've mostly worked with college students, I also teach high school. I've always been good at explaining science to nonscientists. I'm organized and efficient, very friendly, and encouraging. I try to keep study time focused on the goal, while also keeping it positive and fun. I put a lot of emphasis on making sure students actually understand. Why I'm tutoring: I used to be a full-time university professor in Oregon, then recently took a research position here in Boston at a nonprofit downtown where I study endangered species. I am seeking tutoring positions partly because it turns out I really miss teaching (I'll probably return to teaching in a few years) and also in order to get some supplemental income.
