April J.
Private tutor in Brookline, MA
Education
My love of teaching stems from my passion for learning, and desire to ignite the same passion in others! With discipline and drive, I have successfully gained admissions to the top universities and graduate programs of the U.S., and the world. I graduated Phi Beta Kappa and with Highest Honors from the University of California, Berkeley, and completed my Masters at Harvard Medical School. I have over 12 years of tutoring and teaching experiences in California, Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia, both in a classroom setting, as well as in small groups and on a one-on-one basis.
Experience
I have taught a variety of subjects including ESL, writing, science/health, college prep and study skills, and with various audiences from middle school-aged children to college students and working adults. I meet my students where they are at. I leverage the skills of my students, work with them to find out how they best learn ie visual, auditory, tactile, or a combination of these learning modalities, and tailor the lessons and teaching approaches to these learning styles. I work with my students to set short- and long-term goals, to make sure that we are able to come up with a personalized plan that sets up my students for success.

Hobbies
I currently serve as an Assistant Director of a free, noncompetitive long distance running program for middle school and high school students in Boston. The youth I work with, most of whom have no prior running experience, learn to deconstruct impossible. The idea is that if they can do something as seemingly impossible as complete a half-marathon, imagine what else can they accomplish in life, given a safe, supportive environment.
