Experience
I am a graduate of a top liberal arts college and an experienced instructor. I have taught public speaking to fourth graders, tutored middle schoolers at a New York City charter school in math, reading, and writing, and aided high school students with their writing and college applications. I know how to motivate students, and I excel at creating a supportive yet rigorous learning environment. I offer personalized tutoring in writing and SAT preparation. I also advise students on the college application process and their application essays. I bring to my work a command of my subjects. While I majored in English in college, I continue to write regularly. I scored a 2300 on the SAT as a student and have retained a knowledge of successful strategies. Moreover, I have an intimate knowledge of the college application and admissions process, having worked for my own college’s admissions office. Nothing excites me more than watching one of my students develop a lifelong skill. Whether it’s writing, public speaking, or basic math, I start with the basics and build from there, constantly checking for understanding. I ask a lot of questions. This forces my students to explain their reasoning and find their own understanding. When preparing for tests, I emphasize content. I’ve learned how to create compelling yet rigorous lessons, and I design every lesson with a student’s specific needs in mind. While I often begin with the strategies that have worked for me, I strive to find the method that works best for each student. And I have fun. I teach because I love to learn; I love when a question spins off a conversation. (One of my favorite tutoring moments came while discussing the invention of irrigation and agriculture in Mesopotamia; we connected the resulting free time and continued evolution of technology to the invention of my student’s Xbox!) Finally, I strive to build relationships. I’ve learned that in order for learning to happen, mutual respect and trust must come first. Building trusting, productive relationships is at the heart of what I do. I want to ensure that our time together is productive and rewarding. To that end, I have a few policies: --Our first session is free. I want you to be sure that I am the tutor for you. --I send detailed updates after every lesson, including recommendations for further studying or practice. In addition to keeping students and parents informed, this holds me accountable to a high standard of teaching. --I constantly seek feedback from my students and parents. If something’s not working for you, I want to know. I can supply excellent references. Please feel free to reach out with any questions. I hope to work with you! *** FOR RISING SENIORS: August is the perfect time to buckle down on your college application essay. Whether you need help getting started or polishing a draft, I would be a great resource. Let’s make these last few weeks before school count! ***
